今天是……2月29日！四年等一回的今天终于来了。因为这额外多出来的一天，2016不再是365天，而是变成了366。所以，这神秘的一天究竟是什么来历呢？

Leap days are needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the Sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242189 days – or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds – to circle once around the Sun. This called a tropical year.

闰日是为了让我们的日历可以和地球对太阳的公转保持一致。地球绕太阳转一圈需要365.242189天 – 或365天零5小时48分45秒。这被称为一回归年。

Without an extra – or intercalary – day on February 29 nearly every four years, we would lose almost six hours every year.

如果没有每四年额外的闰日——2月29日，我们每年会失去将近6小时。

在中国的纪年中，拥有2月29日的年份被称为“闰年”。而在英语世界中，闰年却被称为“Leap Year”。这个名称是如何来的呢？

The name “leap year” comes from the fact that while a fixed date in the Gregorian calendar normally advances one day of the week from one year to the next, the day of the week in a leap year will advance two days due to the extra day added at the end of February (thus “leaping over” one of the days in the week).

闰年”（Leap Year，直译为“跳跃之年”）的名称来源于一个事实：在公历中，从一年进入到下一年时，一个特定的日期会在那个星期里往前错一天，而在闰年时，那个日子会因为2月底额外加上的一天，而在那个星期里往前错两天（因此“跳过了”那个星期里的某一天）。（注：非闰年365天=一周7天×52周+1天，而闰年366天=一周7天×52周+2天）

For example, Christmas fell on Tuesday in 2001, Wednesday in 2002, and Thursday in 2003 but then “leapt” over Friday to fall on a Saturday in 2004.

例如，圣诞节落在2001年的周二，2002年的周三，2003年的周四，但“跳过了”周五，而落在了2004年的星期六。

According to an old Irish legend, St. Brigid struck a deal with St. Patrick to allow women to propose to men – and not just the other way around – every four years. This is believed to have been introduced to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how leap day balances the calendar.

In many European countries, especially in the upper classes of society, tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman’s proposal on February 29 has to buy her 12 pairs of gloves. The intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.

A 1288 law by Queen Margaret of Scotland (then age five and living in Norway), required that fines be levied if a marriage proposal was refused by the man; compensation was deemed to be a pair of leather gloves, a single rose, £1 and a kiss.

Her plans are interrupted by a series of increasingly unlikely events and are further complicated when she hires a handsome innkeeper to take her to her boyfriend in Dublin.

Many countries have laws defining which date a person born on February 29 comes of age in legal terms. For instance in New Zealand, the official birthday falls on February 28 in common years; in other countries like the United Kingdom, leap year babies have to wait until March 1.
